Learning about Bush Skills for Kids

At Tugela Trails, we believe that many life lessons can be taught through bush skills for kids which helps them to grow into confident, well-rounded adults. Children are able to learn about themselves, gain self-confidence and gain leadership skills in a fun way.

These skills are gained through interaction with nature and spending time in the great big outdoors that South Africa is naturally blessed with.

What are some of the most popular bush skills that kids can learn?

1. Bushcraft

Bushcraft is more than something that sounds like a video game. Here children will learn essential tools in ensuring they are kept strong in nature. These skills include:

  • making fire with materials available
  • sourcing materials to make tools, and
  • finding and accessing water.

2. Navigation skills

If you think navigating with GPS is difficult, try navigating without it!

In nature, you are likely not to have the conventional tools that you have access to every day. This means that if you don’t know how to utilise what is around you, you won’t be able to find your way to safety.

Some of the prized navigation skills in the bush are considered to be:

  • compass skills
  • navigation by landmarks, and
  • navigation by map.

3. Survival Skills

By designing experiences outdoors that are both fun and challenging, survival skills will be learnt and remembered by the children.

Some of the survival skills that are considered the most fun to learn are:

  • plant identification
  • animal track identification, and
  • building a shelter.

“As we progress into the twenty-first century, anyone who considers themselves a realist will have to make the environment a top priority.” – Leonardo DiCaprio

Teaching children about their environment and conservation is no longer ‘something nice to do’, it has become essential. Why Kids need Nature expounds on this.

These skills also teach children life skills and social skills, enabling them to learn to treat others with kindness and respect while gaining self-confidence.
